The 15th of January is called “Koshogatsu”, as opposed to “Oshogatsu” on the 1st of January. There are also cases where the three days from 14th to 16th are called “Koshogatsu”.
The period from the 1st to the 7th of January is sometimes referred to as “O-shogatsu”, and the period up to and including “Koshogatsu” is also known as “Matsu-no-uchi”. In some parts of Japan, Koshogatsu is called “Women’s New Year” as a way of showing appreciation to housewives for their hard work during this period. In other parts of Japan, it is also called Kodo-shogatsu, Niban-shogatsu, Wakanen, Hanashogatsu, Keganshogatsu, or Mirinshogatsu.
On the morning of this day, it is customary to eat azuki porridge made from rice and azuki beans, also known as “akatsuki porridge” because it is eaten early in the morning. In some areas, mochibana (rice cake flowers) and cocoon balls are decorated.
1月1日の「大正月（おおしょうがつ）」に対して、1月15日を「小正月（こしょうがつ）」という。また、14日から16日までの3日間を「小正月」とする場合などがある。
1月1日から1月7日までを「大正月」と呼ぶ場合もあり、この「小正月」までが門松を飾る期間として「松の内」ともいう。「松の内」に忙しく働いた主婦をねぎらう意味で、「小正月」を「女正月」という地方もある。その他、「小年（こどし）」「二番正月」「若年」「花正月」「返り正月」「戻り正月」と呼ぶ地方もある。
この日の朝には米と小豆を炊き込んだ「小豆粥（あずきがゆ）」を食べる習慣があり、早朝に食べることから「あかつき粥」などとも呼ばれる。また、地方によっては餅花（もちばな）や繭玉（まゆだま）を飾る。
