#6 Medical kit
Well more like a medical ninja but they would have one, no? XD Medi nin Iruka!
Iruka may not have gone on as many missions as Kakashi, but he was still a fully trained and more-than-competent shinobi. When he was determined upon a goal, he could gather information, synthesize it, strategize, and execute with the best of them. His slightly off-the-wall youth may have given him an advantage of unpredictability too. Iruka settled in for a difficult, protracted siege. This was the toughest target heâd ever attempted.
Years later, after Kakashi overheard Iruka telling the story to their children, he informed Iruka that the effort was wastedâIruka had infiltrated Kakashiâs heart long before his campaign began.
âDo you have eyes on the target?â
âYes?â
Kakashi frowned. That sounded too much like a question.
âWhat, exactly, does that mean, Naruto?â
There was a long silence over the headset.
âNaruto. Do. You. Have. Eyes. On. The. Target?â
Kakashi tried to sound commanding, but reconnaissance on a target this tough was a tricky proposition. Maybe he shouldnâtâve involved Naruto? Unfortunately, he couldnât think of anyone else who could get close enough to gather the information Kakashi needed.
The sound of a throat clearing behind him was all he needed to know Naruto had been discovered by his ultimate opponent.
âKakashi,â Iruka couldnât quite keep the warble of emotion out of his voice. âWhen we got married, you promised that we would always be a team. What were you thinking? Didnât you have faith that I can help you as well as youâve always helped me?â
There was no response from Kakashi. Iruka wasnât sure there ever would be. Kakashi was so unnaturally still and small in the hospital bed. And the respirator meant that Iruka couldnât pull a mask over Kakashiâs faceâthough whether that action would be meant to comfort Kakashi or himself was a question better left unasked.
âReport!!â
The barked command startled Iruka so badly he nearly flubbed his landing. What could have happened to change his Taichoâs tone that much in the 15 minutes heâd been gone?
âThe shinobi have set up a simple camp two kilometers to the northwest, on a small plateau. They have cover on two sides. Only the front and left approaches appear viable. I detected no traps. At least one nin appears to be injured. There is no visible evidence of their allegiance.â
Kakashi-taicho relaxed by the most infinitesimal amount after Iruka uttered that last sentence. Iruka would always wonder why.
